HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
Our Holiday Celebration began with
Frank Rippl playing the piano. President Deborah welcomed members and
guests. Robb Waugus gave the invocation.
Robb spoke about the “reason for the season”.
Robb participated in a program at Tanner School in Kaukauna with 4K
students called “caring is sharing”.
These students raised money for the USMC “Toys for Tots” program and
then went shopping with their parents to purchase a new toy and then donate
that toy for a child in need. This week
here in the Fox Cities over twenty four hundred families in need will go to the
Salvation Army’s toy shop distribution to get plenty of new toys for their
children. Over 400 families in need will
be helped by the Adopt a Family program in addition to all of the families receiving
food baskets in order to celebrate the season with a special meal. All of this is made possible by your
generosity, so we thank you and wish you a healthy and happy New Year.
Before lunch was served, Ruth Ann
Heeter and Tony Gonzalez talked about Christmas memories. Ruth Ann told a
touching story about a Christmas that meant a lot to her and her family and
even made her choke up at the end of the story.
Tony told a story about a Christmas where his family helped a fellow
neighbor in need. After each story we
began lunch and you could hear all the Christmas stories being shared throughout
the banquet hall.
After lunch, NewVoices performed several
Christmas songs to the Club. Some of
their songs included The First Noel, Hark
the Hearld Angels Sing and Joy to the World. They did a wonderful job and put everyone in
the Christmas spirit.
Thanks to the Family of Rotary Committee for
arranging this program: Tony Gonzalez
(Chair), Ruth Ann Heeter, Nancy Heykes, Nancy Johnshoy and Eric Oelhafen
(co-chair). Also thanks to Frank Rippl
for playing the piano, NewVoices, the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel and staff for
the wonderful lunch and service they provide us every Tuesday and everyone who
made a donation to the Boys and Girls Club.

NOBEL CONFERENCE 2014
In a typical year, more than 5,000
people descend on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College, in southeast
Minnesota, for the annual Nobel Conference.
This year, 100 students and community members from the Fox Cities made
the trek in 2 buses and heard inspiring speakers for 2 days. Mark Jenike, an anthropology professor from
Lawrence, and his son Brian will share their experience at this year’s
conference. Note that a father and son
duo will present. For the Jenikes, the
conference was a family experience. Mark
has Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees from Harvard and UCLA, all in
Anthropology. As an assistant professor
at Lawrence, he organized an evaluation of the Education for Healthy Kids pilot
project at Johnston Elementary School.
That led to a study of food and nutrition at Appleton East and West High
Schools. The findings from these projects were published in Human Organization,
the journal of the Society for Applied Anthropology. Mark served for three years on the board of
the Appleton Education Foundation, and currently serves on the Nobel steering
committee. Mark’s son Brian is a junior
at Appleton West, a member of the National Honor Society, and an AP
scholar. He was a member of the 2014
Science Bowl team from Appleton West that traveled to Washington DC to compete
in the national tournament. Brian is
also a member of the West math team and has won several silver and gold medals
in Fox Valley Math League tournaments.
He plays piano and clarinet, and is a member of the Lawrence Community
Gamelan, and the First Congregational UCC youth bell choir. Both Mark and Brian spoke about the different
speakers they had the privilege to listen to and learn from. Mark touched on a speaker by the name of
Jennifer West, PhD. He was intrigued to
hear that her lab is developing techniques to use a patient’s own cells to grow
replacement blood vessels by synthesizing so-called “scaffold materials,” which
mimic extracellular matrices and provide structure for the growth of
replacement blood vessels. This could be
a big breakthrough for cancer radiation treatments. Both speakers gave great information
regarding the conference
and even referenced next year’s conference in 2015. The
conference will be about “Addiction”. For
more information regarding the Nobel Conference you can check out the website
at https://gustavus.edu/events/nobelconference/2014/. You can also check out the Nobel Conference
on You Tube by typing in Nobel prize 50.

DUCKS UNLIMITED-AMERICA'S ENERGY
Ducks Unlimited is an
international nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands
and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. In January 2012 it had roughly 597,000 members. Their Mission: Ducks Unlimited conserves,
restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s
waterfowl. These habitats also benefit
other wildlife and people. Their Vision:
The vision of Ducks Unlimited is wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with
waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. Thanks to decades of abiding by that
single mission, Ducks Unlimited is now the world’s largest and most effective
private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. DU is able to deliver its work through a
series of partnerships with private individuals, landowners, agencies,
scientific communities and other entities.
Waterfowl are not the only beneficiaries of DU’s habitat work. Wetlands improve the overall health of our
environment by recharging and purifying groundwater, moderating floods and
reducing soil erosion. The United States
alone has lost more than half of its original wetlands, and tens of thousands
of wetland acres continue to be lost at an accelerating rate each year. Each year, DU volunteers and staff hold more
than 4,000 fundraising events across the country. By simply attending a local event, you can
have a great time while helping DU fill the sky with waterfowl for future
generations. If you are interested in
finding out about these opportunities or joining Ducks Unlimited you can simply
log on to their website at www.ducks.org.

NATIONAL HEARING LOOP-JULIETTE STERKENS
Fox Valley Hearing Loop, LLC is located in
Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is owned by Juliette Sterkens and LeRoy Maxfield. Dr. Juliette Sterkens has practiced as an
audiologist in the Fox Valley since 1983.
Dr. Sterkens was named the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA)
Hearing Loop Advocate and she travels around the country to increase awareness
about hearing loss, and the need for an increase in the use of hearing loops to
improve hearing accessibility. A hearing
loop, also known as an Induction or Audio Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless
signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to “T” (Telecoil)
setting. The loop systems consists of a
microphone to pick up the spoken word; an amplifier which processes the signal
which is then sent through the final piece; the induction loop, a wire placed
around the perimeter of a room to act as an antenna that radiates the magnetic
signal to the hearing aid. The purpose
of a hearing loop helps persons who use hearing aids that are equipped with
T-coils hear sounds from a PA system directly and clearly in the hearing aids,
because it reduces or cuts out background noise. There are several locations that have hearing
loop installations in Wisconsin. Here is

Bill
Mullarkey
is proud that he grew up on the Mullarkey Farm in Bear Creek, Wisconsin. His dad was a 3rd generation

his family farm. The start time got
earlier and earlier as he would get older which taught him how to manage his
time later in life. After college Bill
moved back to the Fox Cities and met his wife.
His mother was so excited! Bill

married. She wore out 3 Rosaries praying
that Bill would find his true love and that he did. Bill married his wife Sue and became a family
with 2 step-sons. His parents always

Jeff has been married to Cheryl for 33 years and has 3 grown children. Bill is very proud grandfather to 3
grandchildren. Jeff works at Evans Title

involved with the club and meeting new people.
John
Ulness is
an average cribbage player, according to Steve Taylor. They have been playing cribbage together for

Appleton. He said she jumped in the car
so fast that he knew she was excited for the move. John and his wife Pam live and work in

WWII Vets-Dr. Lowell Peterson
Dr.
Lowell Peterson is a retired M.D. Cardiologist, living in Appleton, WI. Dr. Peterson is the author of many short
stories and has self-published four books.
The Sun Rose Clear was the first published in 2002. His other books include A River, Green Grass
and Fences – Stories of the Childhood; The Birds Were Silver Then – Stories of
the Air War over Vietnam; and a Heartfelt Journey – Memoirs of a Cardiologist. Dr. Peterson spoke to the club about his book
The Sun Rose Clear. This book presents
first-hand accounts of area WWII veterans and essays by Peterson on the history
of the war. In the second edition it
includes new accounts, not only by veterans but from Holocaust survivors. A key difference between the first and second
edition comes from his own recognition of the prejudice “not only against the
Jews, but against blacks in our military because the armed services were
totally segregated in World War II,” Peterson said. Peterson also mentioned that World War II was
a war against the evil of prejudice. “In
many countries, World War II was paramount in breaking down prejudice,”
Peterson said. “In America, it led to
the civil rights movement and too much more tolerance of minorities, including
Jews.”

THE WEIGHT OF THE FOX VALLEY
The Weight of the Fox Valley has been
established to help community members achieve and maintain a healthy weight at
every age. It is a three-county
initiative to address obesity and being overweight in Calumet, Outagamie and Winnebago
counties. As of right now the program
offers two different teams that you can join.
The first team is the Active Communities Action Team. Active community environments increase
resident’s physical activity by providing more opportunities to be active. The second team is the Worksite Action
Team. Worksites are prime settings to
implement healthy habits, since employed adults spend the majority of their
week at work. The Weight of the Fox
Valley would like us to spread the word.
They have a Facebook page they would like you to check out and
like. Again, you can join an action
team. If you are interested in joining
please contact Keren Rosenberg at keren.rosenberg@unitedwayfoxcities.org. Finally they would like you to take the
pledge. By taking the pledge you write
down one healthy change you are going to try and make in your life. If you were not able to attend the meeting on
October 28th please contact Keren at keren.rosenberg@unitedwayfoxcitites.org
and she will mail you a post card. For those of you who were able to attend you
will receive your reminder post card in a few weeks. You will be reminded of
your pledge you wrote down and see if you are still making that change or if
you have not started it is to remind you to make that healthy lifestyle
change. Weight of the Fox Valley wanted
to let members know that there is a meeting on December 11th at
Bridgewood Conference Center in Neenah about Community Health. Dr. Patrick Remington will be the key speaker. If you are interested please join.
