THE CENTER FOR GRIEVING CHILDREN

The Center for Grieving Children is a safe place for children, teens and their families to find compassionate peer support, engage in commemorative activities, gain information about the grieving process, and express feelings and experiences in an accepting environment.  The program is for children 3-18 years of age and the adults who care for them at no charge.  The Center has an evening program called Family Night which occurs on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, from 6-8 pm during the school year.  Family Night begins with a shared meal and visits from therapy dogs.  Participants then break up into five age groups with adults having their own groups as well.  Trained facilitators and volunteers lead these groups through activities designed for the sharing of feelings, life experiences and memories.  These activities often include arts, crafts, interactive games and discussion.  Each Family Night then ends with a candlelight commemorative ceremony.  During the summer the events are held on the third Tuesday of each month.  Volunteers are the heart of the program.  They create a safe and caring place.  Last year over 150 people participated and 80-97% of the families agreed they have been helped.  If you are interested in helping this great organization you can visit their website at www.cgcfoxvalley.org.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Each year our Rotary Club gives college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are committed to community service and have a financial need. The selection process is rigorous.  Scholarship Committee members read close to 40 applications and narrowed the field, and then spent an afternoon interviewing the six top candidates.  Although all of the students were impressive, the committee selected Thomas Kelly from Appleton West, and Alaina Herron and Lauren Hoyer from Appleton North as this year’s scholarship recipients.  Each will receive $4,000 over a four-year period to assist them with their college costs.

Special thanks go to the members of the Scholarship Committee, each of whom invested a significant number of hours in the selection process, and to Jill Muthig at the Community Foundation for her assistance.

CHARLES AND ADELE HEETER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARDS

The Charles and Adele Heeter Outstanding Community Leadership Award is bestowed on Rotarians or individuals of the Appleton/Fox Cities community who exemplify the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self” by providing significant Rotary and/or community leadership and/or service through the use of his/her time, talent or treasury.  Such leadership and/or service should reflect the standards described in the Rotary Four Way Test.  These individuals should also demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism in one of the four Rotary Avenues of Service outside the scope of his/her normal job responsibilities. The Rotary Club of Appleton has a tradition of giving out this award which is accompanied with a Paul Harris Fellowship.  It originated when Charles Heeter made a donation in the amount of $25,000 to the Appleton Rotary Foundation.  The Charles Heeter Fund was then started to recognize outstanding community leaders.  Today, this endowment fund is over $100,000 because of the generous donations from Rotarians and investment results.

Today, the Rotary Club of Appleton presented Cory Chisel with and Adele Heeter Outstanding Community Leadership Award for his community involvement.  Cory has been involved with Harbor House, the Christine Ann domestic abuse shelter, the Fox Cities Compassion Project, CHAPS, Riverview Gardens, Goodwill Industries & Harmony Café, local food and housing shelters, the Fox Cities Book Festival, Fox Valley Voices of Men, and Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway.  He has made a difference in our community through his incredible music, and his probably best known for his role as co-founder of the Mile of Music.  As co-founder of the “Mile of Music”, Cory has been able to make Appleton an international destination for musicians, artists and visitors, while offering music education to many, and at the same time enhancing economic development by supporting local businesses and downtown Appleton.  Cory has shown dedication and commitment to making this community a better place for those who live here; to help local businesses and to make Appleton a destination for people from all over the world.  His goals resonate with the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” and the Rotary Four Way Test.  He is the type of young person who exemplifies the Rotary principles.

For those of you familiar with the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, our recipient of the Charles & Adele Heeter Outstanding Community Leadership Award has been referred to as the “George Bailey” of Appleton.  Our second recipient was Dave Willems, from Willems Marketing and Events.  He exemplifies Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self” through contributing his time, talent and money and dedicating both himself and his company to making the Fox Cities a better place to live.  Some of programs Dave is involved with are: Appleton Compassion Project, helping with the Universal Playground at Appleton Memorial Park, The Voices of Men program, co-founder of Mile of Music, Fox Cities Book Festival and he serves on other board and community organizations.  Dave has done many wonderful things for our community and is making the Fox Cities a better place to live.

UNITED WAY'S PATH PROGRAM

United Way’s PATH (Providing Access to Healing) for students is a school-based program designed to improve access to mental health services for children and youth who are unable to obtain care elsewhere in the community.  The program started as a pilot program in 2008 at the Menasha Joint School District, offering services to elementary, middle and high school students experiencing barriers to care.  In 2011, PATH was expanded to nine other school districts.  That included Appleton, Freedom, Hortonville, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute, Neenah, Seymour and Shiocton school districts.  The therapy is provided by licensed therapist from Catalpa Health, Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin and Lutheran Services of Wisconsin.  Since the beginning of the program in 2008 through August of 2014, PATH has served 830 students and found these results.  72% experienced reduced symptoms, 71% experienced increased functioning, 63% improved academic performance, 61% improved school behaviors, 75% reported progress toward treatment goals and 96% said they would return to therapy if needed.  Many of these students are either uninsured or under-insured and were on waiting lists elsewhere in the community.  Some students had been waiting for a year and a half.  The students experienced barriers to care elsewhere in the community such as: limited financial resources, parent work schedules, lack of reliable transportation, language barriers and lack of parental support.  For students the benefits include avoided medical costs, increased productivity and lifetime earnings, decreased risk of suicide and increased quality of life.  School districts experience decreased truancy and behavioral and counseling expenditures.  For the community there are avoided costs to the criminal justice system.

WORLD SERVICE COMMITTEE – ROTARY SHINES RECIPIENTS

Julie Schmidt from Kenya Works- Makini Sanitary Pad Project received $4750 last year from our Rotary Shines event.  That helped a total of 1750 young girls and women.  This money allows the girls to stay in school and to finish their education, which leads to empowerment.  They money supplied eco-friendly sanitary pads.  After puberty, girls would miss a lot of school and not finish their education.  The girls would receive a package called Afripad Brand, which is a eco-friendly reusable sanitary pad.  It included panties, soap for washing, training for proper use and information on puberty, HIV/AIDS and the reusable sanitary pad.  This project led to 21% increase in school enrollment, 96% increase in girls obtaining a C+ or better score on the Kenya Certificate in primary education (KCPE) exam.

Egide Nimubona spoke on behalf of the Burundi project.  Last year this project received $2615.16 from Rotary Shines and the project will be completed the end of April 2015.  This money allowed them to get toilets and showers in dorms for 25 girls at Muarmba high school.  In the school there are 663 students total.  There are 6 flushing toilets when water is available.  The dorms are for the most vulnerable girls so they don’t have to walk to and from school daily.

Sridhar spoke on behalf of the Integrated Sanitation and Water project in Odisha, India.  The project will fund for separate toilets and shower for Men and Women, have biogas generation for human waste, solar PV and roof slopes to be used for natural water harvesting during rainy season for less water pumping, community water supply for irrigation and drinking, biogas will be used for water heating or street lighting depending on the availability and nominal user free to encourage self-reliance and maintenance.  Phase I (Women’s Unit) building will be ready by April 30, 2015 and Phase II (Men’s Unit) will have one unit of sanitation and drinking project for women will be completed by July 1, 2015.  Sridhar also talked about the Bharati project which will receive funds from our Rotary Shines event this year 2015-2016.  This project rescues girls ages 13-18 from India, Bangladesh and Nepal from human trafficking.  It provides safe and secure homes, counseling and advocacy and empowerment and rehabilitation through education and training.  Rotary will be funding $10,000 to the education and training component.

INTEGRATION OF REFUGEES IN THE FOX VALLEY

Who is a Refugee?  A refugee is someone who is forced to leave their country because of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or social class.  The World Relief is committed to helping refugees fleeing from war and persecution replant their lives, providing legal services to immigrants and responding to the injustice of human trafficking.  It was established in 1944 and currently has 16 international offices and 25 domestic offices.  The World Relief office in the Fox Valley reopened in 2012.  Since the doors reopened they have helped around 300 refugees and 50 now call Appleton their home. Congolese Refugees are the highest in Appleton.  Most of these individuals are from Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda refugee camps.  They have endured torture and trauma, had limited access for healthy services, physical health, have housing issues due to large family sizes and have limited education. How can you get involved you may ask???  There are many ways to help individuals and families working to rebuild their lives in our community.   You could teach classes or serve as a tutor, help families with buying groceries or transportation to medical appointments, help establish a first home with donated furniture, food and household items, help families navigate public transportation, become a mentor to an individual or family, invite your church to engage in various ways or organize fundraisers.  If you are interested in volunteering or giving to the World Relief organization, please visit their website at www.worldrelieffoxvalley.org.  Remember: Diversity represents the difference that makes each of us unique.
